Jorge Buendia from IPSO-Bimsa joined me on Imagen News to talk about a nation-wide survey evaluating the perception Mexicans have regarding the Energy reform debate... And it should not surprise anyone that the population is split. It is clear, according to this survey, that most Mexicans believe that the reform would benefit bigt business, not the "people" and that they prefer that PEMEX continue in the hands of the government... Interesting... If you want to the results of the survey, EL UNIVERSAL did a good job reporting on this survey.. Click here.

"Virtual Kidnapping" is real...And scary....
On my TV show "Seguridad Total" we have done extensive reporting warning phone users about "virtual kidnappings". Ask around...You would be suprised as to how many people have been a victim of these thugs... Who are usually calling from prison...Beware...If you get one of these phone calls...Simply hang-up...Following is an excellent article on the subject written by Marc Lacey from the New York Times...
Mexico City Journal
Exploiting Real Fears With ‘Virtual Kidnappings’
by MARC LACEY
Published: April 29, 2008
MEXICO CITY — The phone call begins with the cries of an anguished child calling for a parent: “Mama! Papa!” The youngster’s sobs are quickly replaced by a husky male voice that means business.

Jennifer Szymaszek for The New York Times
A Mexico City poster warns, “Don’t fall prey to telephone extortion. Let’s get them!”
“We’ve got your child,” he says in rapid-fire Spanish, usually adding an expletive for effect and then rattling off a list of demands that might include cash or jewels dropped off at a certain street corner or a sizable deposit made to a local bank.
The twist is that little Pablo or Teresa is safe and sound at school, not duct-taped to a chair in a rundown flophouse somewhere or stuffed in the back of a pirate taxi. But when the cellphone call comes in, that is not at all clear.
This is “virtual kidnapping,” the name being given to Mexico’s latest crime craze, one that has capitalized on the raw nerves of a country that has been terrorized by the real thing for years. Click here to continue...

How rich is Carlos Slim?
According to Allan, very very rich. But.... well check out this column by Allan Wallo at MEXIDATA.
Is Mexico’s Carlos Slim Really the World’s Richest Man?
By Allan Wall
Mexican mega-magnate Carlos Slim is the owner of the Teléfonos de México (Telmex)/Telcel/América Movil telecoms empire, and many other businesses under the umbrella of his Grupo Carso.
Is Carlos Slim also the richest man in the world?
That’s what Fortune magazine reported this past August – based on the value of Slim’s holdings as of July. Fortune estimated Slim’s fortune at US$68 billion, thus surpassing Bill Gates’ fortune of US$58 billion.
Forbes magazine, on the other hand, releases its billionaire list every March. Last March Bill Gates was still listed as the richest. So in 3 months we can see what Forbes has to say. (The 2007 Forbes list reported 946 billionaires in the world.)
Comparing the wealth of billionaires is difficult, because exchange rates and stock valuations are constantly changing. Thus, proper accounting procedures require the comparison to be based on the rankings of all the billionaires on one single day, which is what Fortune does each year.
Then again, when you’re talking about this kind of money – what’s a billion here or there? – it’s undeniable that Carlos Slim is one of the wealthiest men in the world.
To look at Slim’s wealth in another way, it equals 7% of Mexico’s annual economic output. The assets of John D. Rockefeller, in his heyday, equaled about 2.5% of the annual U.S. economic output. Click here to continue reading Allan´s column.

URGENT INFORMATION FOR DEMOCRATS IN MEXICO
The DEMOCRATS ABROAD´S Americas Regional Meeting will be held Thursday October 25 to Saturday October 27. This meeting will be held in the Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de México in the Zocalo, and will bring together Democrats Abroad members from throughout Latin America. It is a unique opportunity to meet activists from other countries and find out what they are doing. It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet DA members from other parts of Mexico. There are big contingents coming from Ajijic and San Miguel Allende, as well as a few members from other areas. EVERYONE who is a member of Democrats Abroad IS INVITED and all are welcome to participate.
Why is this conference so important?
Next year, on February 5, Democrats Abroad will hold for the very first time a Global Primary, allowing Democrats living overseas the opportunity to chose their candidate using the internet. The concept is straightforward but the implementation, as they say here in Mexico, "tiene su chiste" and requires organization by local activists. During this conference we will learn how the DA Delegate Selection Plan (DSP) works, and what we need to do to ensure that our Primary election runs smoothly. I strongly recommend that all activists attend the sessions devoted to running this primary so come February we know exactly what we have to do. This looks to be a really exciting development. The more important our DA Global Primary is the more the candidates will have to pay attention to our specific concerns.
I plan to be there. I will be talking about the lessons learned from the 2004 Kerry Campaign in Mexico. Click here if you are intereted in attending.

How Embarrasing! How Stupid!

I am sure most of you have been following this story. If not, well you have been missing if not the funniest, the most embarrasing news for the PRI. Roberto Madrazo, the PRI´s presidential candidate was caught cheating at a marathon in Berlin:
Mexican politician caught cheating in marathon
Officials alerted after Madrazo finishes race with too much clothing
Associated Press. October 9
MEXICO CITY - After a humiliating defeat in Mexico’s presidential election last year, Roberto Madrazo appeared to be back on top: He’d won the men’s age-55 category in the Sept. 30 Berlin marathon with a surprising time of 2:41:12.
But Madrazo couldn’t leave his reputation for shady dealings in the dust. Race officials said Monday they disqualified him for apparently taking a short cut — an electronic tracking chip indicates he skipped two checkpoints in the race and would have needed superhuman speed to achieve his win.
According to the chip, Madrazo took only 21 minutes to cover nine miles — faster than any human can run. “Not even the world record holder can go that fast,” race director Mark Milde said. For entire text click here.
Comment: Today, Madrazo issued a press release defending himself, saying that he never intended to finish the race and that the whole thing is a big missunderstanding (Yeah right. He goes to far to state that those who accuse him of cheating have a political mov and that there are political motives behind those who accuse him of cheating, since "they" are trying to discredit him for the work he does from his foundation called "Marathon"..... Give me a break!!!! This guy could have been president of Mexico.

Cri Cri turns 100......

This Saturday, October 6th, we celebrate the birth of Francisco Gabilondo Soler, the mastermind of the beloved figure CRI CRI-the singing cricket. I remember listening and dancing to his music when I was a child. If you live in Mexico City, you may want to tune-in to some of the local radio stations that will be playing his music. Now that I listen to his music as an adult, I realize that many of the beautiful songs he wrote contained messages for adults, not messages that children would necessarily understand... So, grab your kids, and sit down and listen to CRI CRI this weekend.
The following stations will have special programming on Saturday in remembrance of CRI CRI
La 710 AM.
Colorin Color Radio 1530 AM.
W Radio.
