Thanksgiving in Mexico....

Although I'm Mexican and never lived in the States, I find this holiday great because it is a day dedicated to give thanks for all the things we have. There is no special day in the Mexican culture to give thanks, maybe with the exception of December 31st, in which, sometimes, we give thanks for the things that happened in the year, but we are more worried as to where we're going to celebrate the New Year.

I started celebrating Thanksgiving many years ago when I was working in a bilingual school and the principal was American. Some of the teachers (and I) started going to Sanborn's where they have a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Now, I don't work in that school anymore, but I keep the tradition of going to Sanborn's every year. My family and I go to Plaza Satelite (where we think is the best) and we eat, cantaloupe, corn soup, turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, Waldorf salad and pumpkin pie as dessert. In this way we eat deliciously and don't worry about cooking and washing dishes.

Reminder for Americans Living in Mexico City

Friday, November 09, 2007

What are you doing on Saturday?

See you at the Art Fair this weekend! This Saturday November 10th, is the 38th Annual Art Fair at the American School Foundation Campus (which is immediately next the ABC Hospital on Observatorio street here in the DF). The Fair will go from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
More than 5,000 people from all over Mexico City will join ASF in celebrating art on November 10; don't miss out!

This year the event will highlight Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's work with an exhibit curated by the Museo Estudio Diego Rivera. The gallery will showcase a comparative study of their still life paintings, and a workshop for children will be available.

The Art Fair offers something for every member of the family. More than 100 artists will have work on display and for sale, to include sculpture, painting and installation art. ASF student clubs will sell food, drinks and other refreshments to help raise money for their organizations, and the "Bear Cubs' Club" will be back for the second year in a row, to offer the littlest members of the family a chance to express themselves artistically as well.

Tickets are on sale on the day of the event. Cost: $40. I will be manning a table. Look for the IMAGEN News table. See ya there…

Emergency in Tabasco.....

As you may be hearing, watching and listening, there is extensive flooding in Tabasco. According to the local government, Tabasco is now more than 70% under water. One of my government contacts said my be closer to 80%. The main highway is flooded, the capital Villahermosa is un communicated. The governor has compared this tragedy with what happened in New Orleans after the hurricane Katrina in 2005. PLEASE DO NOT TRAVEL TO THE REGION... IN FACT, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has sent out a warden message to inform U.S. citizens that, residents and travelers in the region should be aware of the possibility of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides. U.S. citizens also should carry their travel documents at all times (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID’s, etc.) or secure them in a safe, waterproof location. PLEASE contact friends and family in the United States with updates about their whereabouts. Citizens should know that flights in and out of the area might be delayed or canceled by the flooding. Travelers should contact airlines for the latest updates if they are planning to travel within the region. (In fact these recommendations apply to all, Americans or not.)

By the way the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and counsulates around the country will be closed on Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 for a Mexican holiday. You can reach the Embassy by telephone at (01-55)5080-2000; by fax at (01-55) 5525-5040; and by email at ccs@usembassy.net.mx.
