Better late then never... Here is the summary for July 7th, 2010

++ Nuevo León Governor Rodrigo Medina estimated damages left by tropical storm Alex at more than 10 billion pesos… He said electricity was almost completely back to normal in Monterrey. More than 18,000 people in Anáhuac, Nuevo León, were evacuated from their homes fearing there could be a flood… The town lies next to the Venustiano Carranza damn that went over its maximum capacity because of rainfall from hurricane Alex… The Interior Secretariat declared a natural disaster in 21 towns in Nuevo León so as to release emergency funds to deal with relief efforts there.

++ In Coahuila, authorities were considering evacuating 600 families which live next to the Río Grande in Piedras Negras, because the level of the river was rising dramatically. The Education and Culture Secretariat announced classes were over at the primary and secondary level in the central, wooded and northern area because of the swathe of destruction left by Alex in 14 municipalities in that state.

++ President Felipe Calderón said the way Mexicans turned out to vote on Sunday was a message to reject crime and violence. Speaking in Veracruz, PRI leader Beatriz Paredes said there would be no negotiations with regard to the triumph of the PRI candidate in that state… His triumph she said, is non-negotiable. PAN candidate for governor in Veracruz, former PRI politician Miguel Ángel Yunes, said that if the PRI won’t accept opening the election packages, he would challenge the polls at the local and federal electoral tribunals.

++ Special National Executive Committee delegate Javier Corral, called on PAN members to continue with alliances and so defeat PRI politician Enrique Peña Nieto in elections next year in the State of Mexico. Manuel Camacho Solís, a spokesman for the leftist front Dialogue for the Reconstruction of Mexico, said coalition wins in Oaxaca, Puebla and Sinaloa destroyed the PRI projection that these elections would practically mark its return to Los Pinos.

++ Unknown gunmen murdered journalist Hugo Alfredo Olivera Cartas, a correspondent in Apatzingán for the La Voz de Michoacán newspaper.

News Summary for July 6th, 2010

++ The right-wing-left-wing coalition led by the PAN and the PRD knocked the PRI out of power after 80 years of rule in Oaxaca, Puebla and Sinaloa with stunning electoral victories on Sunday.

In Oaxaca, after 92.13 percent of votes had been counted, PAN-PRD-PT and Convergencia candidate Gabino Cué was the winner with 50.1 percent of ballots over the 41.9 percent gained by his PRI rival Eviel Pérez Magaña.

In Puebla, the PAN-PRD-New Alliance and Convergencia candidate, Rafael Moreno Valle, had 52.4 percent of votes, a more than 10-point advantage over PRI candidate, Javier López Zavala, who took 41.5 per cent of ballots.

The race was closer in Sinaloa, where PAN-PRD-PT and Convergencia coalition candidate Mario López Valdez, earned nearly 52 percent of balloting while his PRI rival Jesús Vizcarra received 46.2 percent of votes.

++ Despite those losses the PRI recovered power in Aguascalientes and Tlaxcala, held by the PAN, and in Zacatecas, that had been under PRD government for several administrations.

The PRI held on to Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Tamaulipas and Quintana Roo… Results were still unclear in Durango and Veracruz, with very tight races.

++ The Interior Secretariat described electionday as safe and peaceful despite some incidents of focalized violence and acknowledged the participation of millions of Mexicans who turned out to vote.

++ PRI president Beatriz Paredes said her party had obtained overwhelming triumphs in the elections, ratifying it as the country’s top political force.

++ Meanwhile PRD leader Jesús Ortega said that the alliances forged with the PAN fulfilled with the goal of defeating longtime hold over power, prove that the PRI was not invincible and creating true competition among parties… Ortega said that his party would now move forward to negotiate an alliance for elections next year in the State of Mexico which political observers say could be a bellwether state for the 2012 presidential race. In a statement made later on in the day Cesar Nava agreed that the PAN would negotiate with the PRD.

++ President Felipe Calderón congratulated winners in governors’ races in Oaxaca, Puebla, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Quintana Roo, Tlaxcala and Tamaulipas.

++ The Supreme Court gave its backing to the closing down of the formerly state-run Compañía de Luz y Fuerza del Centro and denied legal protection – an amparo -- to the Mexican Electricians Union.

++ Nuevo León continued suffered the devastating effects of tropical storm Alex such as lack of drinking water… Unscrupulous salesmen hiked up bottled water prices to the dismay of residents and there were huge traffic jams as well.

News Summary for July 5th, 2010

More than 30 million Mexicans went to the polls in 14 states to elect governors, mayors and local deputies… Most areas were calm but elections were marred by drug-related violence in several of states…

Lets see the results: As of midnight, exit polls and quick counts were pointing to opposition wins by the PAN and PRD coalitions in Oaxaca, Puebla and Sinaloa… This information was relayed on national television stations…

Results were contrasting in Tlaxcala and Durango, both the PRI and the opposition alliance were claiming victory in the governor’s race in those states… As of midnight, it appears that the PRI won Tlaxcala but in Durango the vote count was close, although favoring by a small margin the PRI.

It appeared that there was more agreement with regard to PRI victories in Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Hidalgo, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas…

News Summary for July 2d, 2010

Bloody Thursday...

++ Gunmen killed the Deputy for Internal Affairs at the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office Sandra Ivonne Salas and one of her bodyguards Omar Contreras, in Ciudad Juárez. Another bodyguard was wounded in the attack. Chihuahua Governor José Reyes Baeza called on citizens to go to the polls this Sunday and vote in tranquility since there were sufficient security conditions in the state to guarantee a pacific process.

Also on Thursday there was a shoot-out in Tubutama, Sonora bwtween drugtraffickers and “polleros” where 21 where killed, according to the Attorney General´s Office for the State of Sonora.

++ Tamaulipas Governor Eugenio Hernández said that initial evidence pointed to organized criminals as the culprits in the murder of Rodolfo Torre and another four persons, although a politically motivated assassination had not yet been ruled out.

++ Veracruz Governor Fidel Herrera requested an Amparo (temporary restraining order) in order to face potential lawsuits connected to phone tapings that were leaked to the press in which he is heard in compromising telephone conversations that allegedly involve interfering in election campaigns and supposedly ordering that public funds be illegally channeled to PRI candidates.

++ A federal judge in Phoenix authorized the Mexican government to present arguments against an anti-immigration law in Arizona after accepting the petition filed as Amicus Brief - “Friend of the Court” to support a lawsuit seeking to have the measures revoked.

++ Nine members of the United Peoples Front to Defend Land left the Molino de las Flores prison in the State of Mexico after the Supreme Court ordered their release… The court ordered the liberation of 12 inmates, among them front leader Ignacio del Valle who was still being held in the Altiplano prison.

The Public Security Secretariat said that the remaining three front members, Ignacio del Valle and Héctor Galindo Gochicoa and Felipe Álvarez Hernández, would remain behind bars at the Altiplano penitentiary for robbery, injuries, and damaging public property and communications systems. However, later in the evening lower court judges released the remaining front members including Ignacio del Valle.

++ The Supreme Court is to discuss the theme of the legality of same-sex couple adoptions when justices return from vacation on August 3.

++ The Federal District Attorney General’s Office decried the poor planning behind the failed rescue operation last year, on July 3, 2009, in which Yolanda Ceballos Coppel and another three people were killed.

++ Hurricane Alex, after being downgraded to a tropical storm, caused damages to schools and highways, increased river water levels and left thousands of people in shelters with electricity blackouts and communications cuts in Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila.

++President Felipe Calderón said that 513,000 news jobs were created in the first half of 2010.

News Summary for July 1st, 2010

++ The PRI selected Egidio Torre Cantú as its new candidate for governor in Tamaulipas after his brother Rodolfo Torre Cantú was killed on Monday. In an interview with Grupo Imagen, Egidio Torre Cantu stated that his brother Rodolfo had nothing to fear, and had not received death threats prior to his assassination. Egidio said that he accepted being appointed candidate for governor to honor his brother.

++ The Durango Unites Us coalition composed of PAN, PRD, Convergencia and PT suspended the final campaign rally in the town of Pánuco de Coronado after a shootout occurred there.

++ The Interior Secretariat offered to beef up security for candidates and party leaders in the 14 states in which elections are to be held on Sunday… The Interior Secretariat said that efforts would be made to avoid citizens´ from being intimidated that would stop them from going to vote due to police deployment. Meanwhile the IFE called on political players to promote a “tranquil climate” on election day next Sunday.

++ Campaigns were wrapping up Wednesday in the 14 states set to hold elections.

++ Interior Secretary Fernando Gómez Mont denied that it was thanks to PRI support that President Felipe Calderón took office on December 1, 2006, as PRI leader Beatriz Paredes said.

++ PRD chief Jesús Ortega said “it would be vile” if anyone thought they could gain political advantage from the murder of the PRI Tamaulipas gubernatorial candidate, Rodolfo Torre Cantú.

++ The special prosecutor for Attention to Electoral Crimes, Arely Gómez, resigned from her position. She has hinted that she was being “pressured” to take-on specific investigations.

++ The Supreme Court ordered the immediate release of 12 San San Salvador Atenco villagers who were arrested because of violent events in February and May 2006… Justices ruled that prosecutors had failed to validate the charge of kidnapping, for which they were sentenced.

++ Civil Protection authorities in Tamaulipas announced an orange alert as hurricane Alex, a category two storm, was expected to blow through the region… Twenty thousand people were being evacuated from the Tamaulipas coastline from La Pesca to Matamoros.
