News Summary for August 4th, 2010

++ On the second day of the Dialogues for Security President Felipe Calderón
warned that violence will continue in Mexico for quite a while as a result of
the turf wars among criminal organizations. He said that regulating drugs is a core debate that must occur in a democracy
like Mexico.

++ The director of the CISEN, Guillermo Valdés, said that during this administration 28,000 people have been killed in the battle against organized crime.

++ PRD national leader Jesús Ortega called on the federal government not to be
afraid to discuss drug legalization as part of a strategy to reduce violence in
Mexico.

++ Jalisco Governor Emilio González Márquez said he supported a federal
investigation into whether local police forces had been offering protection to
Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel.

++ Mexicana de Aviación filed a commercial request to refinance its debt with a
Mexico City tribunal… This move came after pilots and cabin crew staff refused a
drastic cut to their wages and benefits as well as the buying conditions for the
airline.

++ The Federal District Tourism Secretariat and the National Touristic
Confederation said the Mexicana de Aviación crisis should lead to a revision of
the country’s airline sector.

++ Seven of 11 Supreme Court ministers could vote in favor of declaring that the
reforms to the Civil Code in the Federal District that allowed same sex
marriages were unconstitutional.

++ The remains of Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel and his nephew Mario Coronel were
buried in the Jardines del Humaya, cemetery in Culiacán, Sinaloa... Military
staff cordoned off the area both outside and inside the cemetery.
