News Summary for December 6th, 2009

++ The so-called X Commando, made up of more than 100 hired gunmen, kidnapped the head of judiciary police corps, Jesús Raúl Arce Osuna, and his fellow police officer Fausto Samuel Zamudio, in Angostura… Both men were freed hours laters.

++ Ten kidnappers died in an operation to free six kidnap victims in Durango.

++ Simultaneous fragmentation grenade attacks occurred in the cities of Hermosillo, Navojoa and Cananea, in Sonora state… Three people were wounded…

++ President Felipe Calderón warned that his government will not back off in the battle against organized crime as some have suggested.

++ Amnesty International criticized the Mexican army and said that civilian and military authorities deny or ignore crimes committed by the Army in the fight against organized crime and narcotics traffickers.

++ Michoacán governor Leonel Godoy said there are no easy methods to avoid organized crime from threatening mayors in Michoacán.

++ Washington will next week deliver five Bell helicopters to Mexico, as part of the Mérida Initiative.

++ Isabel Miranda de Wallace, who is the president of the “End to Kidnapping” association, submitted to the Chamber of Deputies a proposal on a General Law on Kidnap Victims… The proposal stipulates that the three levels of government will pay damages if police or public servants carry out a kidnapping.

++ The PRD, PT and Convergencia party announced they were forming a political front called Dialogue for the Reconstruction of Mexico… Their aim is to gather leftist political parties and groups with the eventual aim of nominating a single candidate for the 2012 presidential elections…

++ The Mexican Electricians Union warned that 16 members of the union on hunger strike will not lift it until all workers dismissed in the shut-down of power utility Luz y Fuerza are hired again.
