News Summary for December 10th, 2009

++ So the rumors were on target, on Wednesday President Felipe Calderón withdrew Agustín Carstens from the Finance Secretariat and proposed that he should become next governor of the central Bank of Mexico, taking over from Guillermo Ortiz.

Calderón also announced he was appointing Ernesto Cordero as Finance Secretary and Heriberto Félix Guerra as new Social Development secretary replacing Cordero.

The Senate still has to vote to confirm Carstens’ appointment as new Bank of Mexico governor… The deadline is next Tuesday.

++ Members of the PRD Senate caucus criticized Ernesto Cordero’s appointment as new Finance Secretary… They charged that when Cordero was Social Development secretary five million Mexicans joined the ranks of the poor.

++ The United Nations Mexico office said the Calderón government is not doing enough to fight corruption.

++ The Supreme Court rejected the constitutional controversy complaint filed by legislators with the Federal District Legislative Assembly challenging the presidential decree that ordered the shutting-down of power utility Companía Luz y Fuerza del Centro.

The court rejected the complaint saying the decree does not impinge on legislative assembly jurisdiction.

++ The Mexican Electricians Union announced it would resume negotiations with the Interior Secretariat seeking to resolve the conflict arising from the shutting down of Luz y Fuerza del Centro.

++ The dissent teachers group within the national teachers union known as the “Coordinadora” announced classes were being suspended in Tancítaro, Michoacán, because of reigning insecurity… The decision was made after municipal officials resigned after receiving alleged threats from organized crime.

++ Federal District Governance Secretary José Ángel Ávila said that there is an “absence of government” in Iztapalapa that has led to shortages in public services. (Comment: Does this mean that the mayor of Mexico City will no longer support Juanito as Burough Chief?
