Late... But here it is... Summary of the most important news in Mexico for December 8th, 2009

++ Governors from 31 states and the Federal District meeting at the 37th National Governors Conference approved an insecurity and victimization evaluation or measuring system that is set to begin operating in February 2010. (Comment: The governors want an evaluation system that they can control, since numbers and surveys presented by NGO´s are very critical of their work…)

++ Michoacán Governor Leonel Godoy said that the mass resignation of public officials at the Tancítaro mayoralty was because of direct threats from organized crime. (Comment: We should expect more of these “mass” resignations....)

++ A criminal judge ordered 30-day temporary detainment for 25 people arrested on Thursday in connection to an alleged rehab center that was actually an illegal sweat shop with 105 people held against their wishes and forced to work in slave conditions.

++ A group of U.S. experts began a new investigation into what caused the tragic fire at the ABC day care center in Hermosillo, Sonora, that killed 49 infants and toddlers. Also in Sonora, during the evening there were simoultanous grenade attacks in three cities: Hermosillo, Cananea and Navojoa.

++ Clara Brugada said that until she is officially notified that she has been dismissed by Iztapalapa borough chief Rafael Acosta, "Juanito," she will not hand over administration of the borough office. (Comment: Clara Clara Clara…. Give it up… It is over… They may be able to kick-out Juanito… But you will not replace him….)

++ The Interior Secretariat and the Mexican Electricians Union renewed talks aiming to set up social security for workers who were laid off from power utility Compañía de Luz y Fuerza del Centro.

++ Senate committees approved constitutional amendments to the amparo law, the debate will continue in the plenary.

++ Once again Finance Secretary Agustín Carstens referred to rumors that would have him be appointed the next governor of the Bank of Mexico… Carstens said he is content with his current job… Earlier he had said that if President Calderón appointed him as new central bank chief, he would comply…(Comment: Will he go? Will he stay? Who will replace him..?)
