News Summary for November 21st, 2009

++ As he marked the 99th anniversary of the start of the Mexican Revolution President Felipe Calderón pleaded for dialogue between political and economic players in Mexico… He proposed that 2010 become the year of the fatherland and of profound and pacific change in Mexico.

++ Interior Secretary Fernando Gómez Mont agreed that the impulse to change sparked by the Mexican Revolution should help to strengthen processes to allow Mexico to grow economically and institutionally.

++ Coparmex announced that it would in January present three proposals for state, fiscal and labor reform… The state reform program will include reelection for lawmakers and mayors as well as reducing political party funding.

++ The National Statistics and Geography Institute said Mexico’s economy grew by nearly three percent in the third quarter, a sign that the recession is over.

++ The executive administration at the Economic Commission for Latin America said that Mexico’s inflation is the lowest on the continent, which helps to hold back prices on basic goods thus helping the country’s poorest families.

++ Senate speaker Carlos Navarrete called on the federal government not to be arrogant and to listen to international experts when they speak of Mexico’s mistaken response to the world economic crisis.

++ The Attorney General’s Office began an investigation into the attacks Thursday at PGR facilities in Celaya and on four municipal police guard posts in Villagrán, Guanajuato… No one was hurt in the attacks.

++ Celaya city hall canceled the November 20 military parade and suspended school classes fearing there could be more attacks.
