News Summary for November 13th, 2009

++ Labor Secretary Javier Lozano condemned the violence during protests by electrician’s union supporters and the inconvenience caused to many by the demonstrations and marches by the Mexican Electricians Union and its sympathizers… Lozano insisted there will be no backtracking on the liquidation of power utility Company Luz y Fuerza del Centro.

++ The Finance Secretariat has allotted an initial sum of 200 million pesos for former Luz y Fuerza workers interested in starting up a business.

++ Mexican Electricians Union leader Martín Esparza Flores said his followers were not to blame for the disturbances during roadway blockades… He said it was federal police who blocked the way on the Mexico-Querétaro highway were several officers were run down by SME followers.

++ Telephone workers union leader Francisco Hernández Juárez said that conditions are not right for workers to launch a national strike as proposed by the Mexican Electricians Union.

++ The PRD called on the Finance Secretariat to show fair treatment to all Mexican states when it approves the 2010 spending budget… The PRD asked the Finance Secretariat not to “punish” states governed by the PRD because the PRD stood against tax increases.

++ San Pedro Garza mayor Mauricio Fernández pledged before PAN leader César Nava to fight insecurity using lawful methods.

++ Choapas and Aguadulce, two municipalities in Veracruz, have been flooded for 12 days… Thirty thousand people are stranded and the only way to reach them and send help is by water or air.
