News Summary for December 1st, 2009


++ The political soap opera could not get better… Iztapalapa borough Chief Rafael Acosta, “Juanito,” entered his own office with the help of a locksmith and accompanied by a notary public. Then he dismissed judicial, government and administration directors, all of them close to his former deputy Clara Brugada, whom he also fired just minutes later… “Juanito” said he would only give up the post of borough chief that is his through constitutional right, “over his dead body.” Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said the situation in Iztapalapa "has reached the limit,” and so he would request that the Federal District Legislative Assembly come up with a solution to guarantee public services for borough residents.

++ Someone actually supports the president? And from the left? Senate speaker Carlos Navarrete welcomed proposals by President Felipe Calderón to allow re-election in the cases of legislators and mayors.

++ Are they really convinced? Coparmex said that the assessment of the first three years of Calderon’s administration was good but results were insufficient.

++ Good-bye to the left side of the court. Genaro Góngora Pimentel stepped down as Supreme Court justice after a nearly 40-year career in the nation’s legal system. As he retired, Góngora Pimentel said it was urgent for Mexico to decide what will happen in the short, middle and long term regarding the role judges play in society.

++ Buyers Beware…The Health Secretariat warned that inspectors have discovered fake products being sold in street markets or tianguis that allegedly are medications to treat or prevent A H1N1 influenza… The Health Secretariat urged citizens not to buy medications in markets, as the vaccine will only be applied in public sector health clinics.

++ Brrrrrrrr. The National Water Commission said that between 25 and 30 cold fronts are expected to reach Mexico later this winter season…
