
++ The prosecutor assigned to the special organized crime special investigations unit ordered the detention of Arnoldo Rueda Medina, known as “La Minsa” and who is accused of being one of three operations chiefs for the La Familia Michoacana drug cartel… He was arrested over the weekend. A shootout in Veracruz’s historic downtown left two hired gunmen killed. One person was arrested.
++ President Felipe Calderón warned that despite the “barrage” from organized crime the federal crime will maintain its security strategy, which, he said, is sparking a desperate and violent backlash from criminals.
++ Human Rights Watch asked the United States not to release Mérida Initiative funds until Mexico can guarantee human rights standards are met in the battle against organized crime.
++ PRI senators warned the Finance Secretariat that it will have to choose between the IETU single rate business tax, or the income tax, because they will not allow two taxes being applied while the country is in the midst of an economic crisis.
++ The Mexican Supreme Court set back debate on whether it will take on an investigation into the fire at the ABC day care center in Hermosillo, Sonora, that led to the deaths of 48 young children… The issue will be discussed once again in August when the court resumes activities after summer holidays.
++ Coparmex president Ricardo González Sada said results from the midterm elections do not mean an end to President Calderón’s government, but rather the start of a second half in which a new team line-up and strategy are needed to resolve the country’s problems.
++ Canada announced that as of this week Mexicans traveling to that country will need a visa… This is because of an increase in fake refugee status requests… Mexico said it regretted the decision and announced it will continue to pursue efforts to have Canada change its mind about visas once again.
