News Summary for June 9th, 2009

I just returned from Hermosillo Sonora. Sorrow for the death of the 44 children is now is transforming into outrage. The death of these children has impacted Hermosillo, the State of Sonora and Mexico. What is the latest?
++ After insisting that the ABC privately-run IMSS day-care center in Hermosillo, Sonora that was hit by a fire that claimed the lives of 44 children complied with all IMSS requirements, two owners quit their government jobs… One of them resigned from his position as administrative director at the state Infrastructure and Urban Development Secretariat and the other as deputy Livestock Farming secretary. And in Jalisco, 10 children under three years who suffered severe burns from the ABC daycare fire remained in serious condition… They are at the Centro Médico de Occidente hospital… (Comment: Every time a press conference is announced by the Sonora government, one wonders… Will they announce the death of more children?)

In other news there is a lot of law and order news that we need to report:
++ Soldiers in Matamoros, Tamaulipas captured Mario Alberto Cárdenas Medina, who goes by the alias “El Betillo,” and is the nephew of former Gulf cartel leader Osiel Cárdenas Guillén.

++ Military reports stated that members of the Beltrán Leyva cartel set up a protection network in Guerrero, with the support of state police.

++ A federal judge ordered 40-day temporary arrest for Gerardo Hernández Miranda, known as “El Vela,” and who is accused of being involved in the Cieneguillas, Zacatecas prison breakout on May 16.

Now, let´s talk about why it is safe to travel in Mexico…

++ ++ The Communications and Transportation Secretariat said that problems affecting Aviacsa airline are not cosmetic, but rather go deeper… Communications officials said Aviacsa cannot guarantee good service. Aviacsa charged the Communications and Transportation Secretariat of violating an order a judge had issued in April to prevent the company’s planes from being grounded.

Ahhhh yes, now my favorite dreamer…
++ President Felipe Calderón expressed his belief that the worst part of the economic crisis in Mexico will soon be over.

Why would anybody take this job?

++ Benjamín González Roaro was appointed as new National Lottery chief taking over from Miguel Ángel Jiménez, accused of financing PAN campaigns in Campeche state.

With all the disasters taking place in Mexico, we have literally have forgotten what is going on in the rest of the world… Remember our influenza crisis… well it is about the problem is about to get worse…

++ The World Health Organization is on the verge of declaring full pandemic status in connection to the A H1N1 influenza outbreak but wants to be sure countries are able to prevent widespread panic.
