
++ Mexican president Felipe Calderón met with Cuban leader Raúl Castro for the first time. Both men were at a summit in Brazil. They discussed the regeneration, and the strengthening of ties between Mexico and Cuba. The meeting was private and Raúl Castro said there will be a state visit by Calderón to Cuba.
++ Friends and fellow university students who knew murdered kidnap victim Silvia Vargas Escalera went to the Senate to hand in a letter in which they expressed their concern about insecurity in the country… They demanded that every action needed be taken to bring an end to these tragedies.
++ The Chamber of Deputies will in January discuss the proposal to implement the death sentence for kidnappers who murder their victims… The proposal was put forth by the Coahuila state congress.
++ The Attorney General’s Office said that the disappearance of U.S. expert in kidnappings Félix Batista, which occurred in Saltillo, Coahuila, is being investigated by local authorities, since it is not a federal crime.
++ Deputy Foreign Affairs Secretary Carlos Rico said that agreements to send aircrafts to Mexico worth 116.5 million dollars will be signed before the end of the Bush administration… Those airplanes are part of the Mérida Initiative.
++ Senate PRD coordinator Carlos Navarrete said that it is not only Andrés Manuel López Obrador who sparks a negative reaction, the party too has slipped in vote intentions. He said that polls show that 40 percent of voters will not cast their ballot in favor of the PRD… That’s why he said, both López Obrador and the PRD must change their strategies in election campaigns in 2009.
++ Labor Secretary Javier Lozano said that the increase to the minimum wage will be greater than 4 percent, even though business leaders called for an increase of between 3.8 and 4 percent.
