No surprises in the citizen’s consultation on energy reform held in Mexico City and was organized by the Broad Progressive Front and the Mexico City government… The “NO” option won according to an exit poll by the Mitofsky pollster firm which interviewed citizens at 74 voting booths.
The Citizen’s Consultation organizing committee claimed there were efforts to intimidate citizens and block them from going to voting booths both in the Federal District and in the other nine states where the consultation took place.
Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard criticized the federal government for rejecting a national consultation on energy reform and said that the result of the consultation will have an effect on decisions to be made in coming weeks by Congress.
And former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador threatened national protests if results of the consultation are not respected…
During the PAN national council held this weekend in León, Guanajuato, PAN leader Germán Martínez warned that his party will not allow another blockade of Congress by the Broad National Front to prevent the approval of reforms to Pemex.
President Felipe Calderón sent a message to PAN leaders to make one last effort to achieve energy reform.
The Public Education Secretariat and the National Teachers Union announced that August 11 will be the date for national exams for teaching positions… Oaxaca and Michoacán are not included in this test date.
The Catholic Church is backing the federal government’s fight against organized crime… In an editorial in the “Desde la Fe” weekly, the Archdiocese of Mexico called for greater education for youths, so they do not fall prey to narcotics traffickers… And, in his homily this Sunday, cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera thanked the faithful for their support during his 13 years at the helm of the Mexico Archbishopric.
Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mouriño said that in 10 days authorities will give a report on the extent of damages caused by hurricane Dolly in Tamaulipas.
One of Mexico’s wealthiest citizens, businessman Isaac Saba Raffoul, died over the weekend at the age of 84, a victim of cancer… Saba Raffoul’s broad business interests included the distribution, through Casa Saba, of pharmaceutical items, beauty and health products, and textiles such as garments and fabrics.
