News Summary for January 31st, 2008


++ PRI leader at the Chamber of Deputies, Emilio Gamboa, said that if the three new IFE councilors have not been chosen by February 7, his party will come to an agreement with the PAN to find a solution. Gamboa Patrón said his party has given him the go-ahead to “clinch” an agreement with the PAN.

++ And PRI senator, Francisco Labastida, said his party is waiting for a draft bill from the Executive Branch regarding energy reform to begin discussions on the issue.

++ As he announced bidding for contracts for the Third Mexico City Suburban Train president Felipe Calderón called on political parties to join efforts to benefit Mexico.

++ Mexico’s Supreme Court rejected legal protection against extradition for the former president of Guatemala, Alfonso Portillo Cabrera… The former Guatemalan leader is accused of embezzling more than four million dollars…

++ Tom Shannon, assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs for the U.S. Department of State, said the Mérida Initiative will be approved this year, although he did not give a specific date.

++ And, speaking in Washington, Public Security Secretary Genaro García Luna, warned that the Mexican government will not be intimidated by criminal organizations… he said.

++ The central bank, Bank of Mexico, lowered the expected economic growth rate for Mexico in 2008 from between 3.25 and 3.75 per cent to between 2.75 and 3.25 per cent, because of a possible recession in the United States.

++ In other news, the director of the Auxiliary Banking, Industrial and Commercial Police in Oaxaca, Alejandro Barrita Ortiz, was gunned down at a sports park where he went to run.
