News Summary for January 29th, 2008


++ At a meeting with PAN deputies, President Felipe Calderón proposed fostering a responsible discussion about the future of the energy sector based on objective analysis of the situation.

++ PAN national leader Germán Martínez, said his party is in no rush to present a law bill on energy reform that continues to be reviewed by PAN lawmakers and the Executive branch.

++ And PRI senator leader Manlio Fabio Beltrones, said his party is willing to assume the political costs of supporting the modernization of Pemex.

++ Meanwhile, Ruth Zavaleta, president of the Chamber of Deputies ruling board, met with Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mouriño at the Legislative building to analyze the agenda of topics to be discussed during the next congressional period.

In a press release, Mouriño underscored the importance of maintaining good relations with the other branches of government.

And Zavaleta said after the meeting there was agreement to work to review pending matters, but that energy reform was not discussed.

++ Alfredo Araujo Ávila, known as “Popeye,” and accused of being a top leader of the Arellano Félix drug cartel, was taken to the El Altiplano maximum security prison.

Araujo Ávila is accused of being an accomplice to the murder of cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo in 1993 and also of an attack against journalist Jesús Blancornelas in 1997.

++ Guadalajara Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iñiguez did not rule out that Araujo Ávila will be made into a scapegoat in the Posadas case.
