++ The Senate approved changes to the social security law with 85 votes in favor and 32 against. The new changes will create the “Pensionisste” pension fund. Mexico's Congress approved a bill to lower the cost of a government-worker pension system, which was approved last week in the lower house, increases the age for retirement and sets up individual accounts for pensioners. The PRI faction at the Senate presented an initiative to reform laws for the retirement savings plan (otherwise known as the SAT --Sistema de Ahorro para el Retiro) proposed by Manlio Fabio Beltrones to protect the ISSTE law and assure that the leader of the Pensionisste is not partisan or belong to one given union. The leader of the PAN at the Senate, Santiago Creel, said that the PRD has every right to oppose the ISSTE reforms at the Supreme Court of Justice. Thousands of university workers, electricians and transport workers gathered at the Mexico City Zocalo –they marched there from the Angel de Independencia on Reforma. According to Mexico City authorities, the number of protesters was above 20.000 while the organizers estimated a total of 80.000 protesters.
For a good description of what are the objectives of the ISSTE bill I suggested reading the bloomberg report httclicking here www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601086&sid=aFqzZU0sIRuM
