News Summary for January 8th

The Christmas school vacations are over. This Monday over 25 million students go back to school – this includes over 1.1 million school teachers and over 3.8 million students who go back to college and universities.

The PRI agreed to the rules that will govern the election for it´s new leadership. The registration of candidates will take place up to January 18 and as of January 19 till February 17 the campaign to elect its national leader will take place. On February 18 the PRI will hold elections to elect their leader – and they will announce the result on that very same day.

In Michoacán the investigations into the ¨narcofosas¨ continue - these narcofosas were found last Thursday in the Lázaro Cárdenas section of Uruapan... The Attorney General of the State, Juan Antonio Magaña, said that they will evaluate whether the PGR (the Attorney General´s Office) should conclude the investigation.

A police commander in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon has been killed on the job. Eleazar Ruiz Vargas, 50, was killed while responding to a report of a robbery. His partner, Rodolfo Sonora, a police agent, was wounded.

Zeferino Torreblanca, the governor of Guerrero, said that he will ask the Secretary of Public Federal Security, Genaro García Luna for a military-police operative like the one recently carried out in Michoacán and Tijuana.

After Sunday mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, the cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera said that the Tijuana operative against drug dealers is only ONE element to combat organized crime – he pointed out that promoting values in society is also needed. .

During President Fox´s six year term, the PGR destroyed more than 250,000 marihuana plantations, and seized more than 18 tons of cocaine and it dismantled 93 narco-laboratories across Mexico.

The PAN national Committee in the state of Aguascalientes, said that it would dissociate itself from all the actions by the state government, after it was made known that the Luis Armando Reynoso, the governor, is taking out a loan of two million pesos.
