- Much is happening in Oaxaca. This is a recap of what has happened since last Friday: There was a shot-out on Friday in downtown Oaxaca, between APPO protesters and a group of armed civilians, presumably supporters of the PRI governor Ulises Ruiz. A teacher and a US cameramen was killed, numerous were injured. The US Ambassador Tony Garza demanded that the Mexican government address the conflict.
- Also on Friday, teachers Union Section 22 representatives discussed the possibility of resuming classes in Oaxaca, only if a document of intent to safeguard their guarantees is signed by the Interior Ministry. The demands consist on physical, labor and management security, as well as the payment of belated salaries, political prisoners´ liberty and a fund for families whose relatives were killed during the conflict.
- ON Saturday airplanes from the Federal Preventive Police PFP and the Army started flying-in to Oaxaca City´s airport transporting law enforcement personnel and soldiers. On Sunday they started to re-take downtown Oaxaca and the University and one of the radio stations that had the APPO continues to illegally retain.
- On Monday, most of the stores and banks in Oaxaca City were closed. Classes did resume in some parts of the state, however, the Teacher’s Union rep said that due to the presence of the PFP in downtown Oaxaca, classes in that city would not resume.
- Last week, given the unconditional support from PRI legislators to Ulises Ruiz, PRD deputies turned a political trial suit against the governor of Oaxaca due to “actions performed that have produced anarchy and lack of the rule of law”. This Monday, however, the Senate voted unanimously on a recommendation (exhorto) for the Governor Ulises Ruiz asking him to consider stepping down. In the Lower House, a similar recommendation was voted on, which was not supported by the PRI and the Green Party. However, the PRI leader in Congress Emilio Gamboa told the press that Ulises Ruiz should consider if he could actually govern the state under these circumstances. Ulises responded by going to the Supreme Court and suing Congress for going beyond its scope of authority.
- Through out Monday, there were ongoing confrontations with the APPO and the PFP police. Marches took place in Mexico City in support of the APPO demanding that the PFP leave Oaxaca.
