News Summary for September 20th

While he participated in the General Assembly at the UN, President Fox said that Mexico is a country with solid institutions, and a where people live in peace and tranquility.

Before speaking at the UN, President Fox spent some time with George Bush. They agreed to re-enforce measures to combat organized crime, and continue with extraditions to the USA. Bush also agreed to keep on working on a migration bill.

It is the 21st anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. Carlos Abascal, the minister of the Interior headed a ceremony to remember the victims of this tragedy. Alejandro Encinas, the Mexico City Mayor was by his side. At 7.19 am on the dot, Abascal put the Zocalo flag at half-mast.

With the support of the PAN, PRI and the Green Party, the Senate rejected a proposal to create a special commission to do follow up work on the situation in Oaxaca. This proposal was put forward by Gabino Cue, the Convergencia senator.

During the session at the chamber of deputees, the PRD legislator, Francisco Santos Arreola, showed a placard that said ¨I think the same as Cardenas¨ He said that he is not in agreement with Lopez Obrador´s strategies and that between 40 and 50 members of his party think the same as he does. Deputees of the PRI, the PAN and the Green Party rejected a PRD proposal by the Special Commission to safeguard the electoral ballots of the July 2 election.

Felipe Calderón, the president-elect met with Fernando Canales Clariond, the Minister of Energy, Alfredo Elias Ayub, the head of the Federal Electricity Commission, and Luis Ramírez Corzo, the head of Pemex. Germán Martínez resigned from his post as PAN representative at the PAN in order to join Felipe Calderon´s transition team.

The session of the Supreme Court of Justice, rejected Guillermo Ortiz Mayagoitia´s ruling, which said that there were no grave violations to the rights of the journalist Lydia Cacho. The case was handed over to Jesús Gudiño Pelayo in order for him to present a new ruling.
